Korea to Provide More Than $13 million to Help Cambodia’s Agricultural Sector by 2027

The Republic of Korea has provided a total of $13.4 million  to support the agricultural sector in Cambodia. The project is divided into three major sections and  will run until 2027.

According to the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Veng Sakhon, on June 17, 2021, the progress of agricultural extension work under the cooperation between the Ministry of Agriculture and the Republic of Korea was as follows:

  1. The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Cambodia and the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs of the Republic of Korea signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the Record of Discussion on June 16, 2017 On “Support on Construction of Agricultural Technology Training Center in Cambodia” (Support on Construction of Agriculture Technology Training Center in Cambodia).

The project received a total grant of $3.,5 for five years  until 2022. This project is to be implemented at Ta Saang Agricultural Training and Extension Center, Svay Rieng Province. The purpose of the project is to train agricultural specialists by improving equipment, using training assistance, disseminating and providing employment opportunities for agricultural specialists, increasing the capacity of local farmers through the transfer of new technologies, increasing farmers’ incomes through Improving the productivity and quality of agricultural products.

  1. In addition to the “Support for the Construction of Agricultural Technical Training Centers in Cambodia” project, the Cambodian Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries also cooperates with the Korean Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs through the Korea Rural Community Cooperation (KRC). ) Signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the Record of Discussion on June 9, 2020 to implement the project “Supporting Agricultural Center in Kratie, Cambodia” (Supporting Agricultural Center in Kratie, Cambodia). $2.9 million.

The project will run for 48 months from 2021 to 2024 in Chit Borey district, Kratie province. The project aims to support the construction of agricultural training and extension centers, training in agricultural techniques and knowledge transfer to officials and farmers on cassava, corn and vegetable production, increasing farmers’ incomes and livelihoods through the transfer of agricultural technology. The project will start in the second half of 2021.

  1. In addition to cooperation with the Korean Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, the Cambodian Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries also sought the cooperation and support of the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) on agricultural extension work through a project on “Promoting Promoting Digital Agricultural Technology ”with a budget of approximately 7 (seven) million US dollars for a period of 5 years (2023-2027).

This project is designed for the purpose of 1. Promote the use of digital agricultural extension technology, infrastructure and effective use of digital systems, 2. Strengthen the digital system and the rate of people gaining knowledge on the use of digital systems for agricultural extension and 3. Strengthen the capacity of commune extension officers and agricultural extension agents on digital technology.
