Leni-Kiko to assist OFWs in agriculture

2022-04-06

VICE presidential aspirant Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan vows to boost farming opportunities in the Philippines for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) seeking an alternative livelihood after they retire.

According to Pangilinan, he and presidential candidate Leni Robredo already have a clear plan for OFWs who would like to venture into agriculture.

He said that the country needs a “no nonsense reintegration program for OFWs,” and that many have reached out to him and have no idea how and where to start.

In case he wins, he plans to operationalize the program with the Department of Agriculture, so that OFWs with savings may start with small-scale farming and “provide them the necessary support so that they can come home.”

Pangilinan also suggested that adopting or establishing a farm enterprise will help OFWs match their earnings from working abroad. For the former food security secretary, Filipinos are seeking greener pastures overseas because the wages offered in the country are not enough to live a comfortable life.
